Hi there! I’m a native Brazilian, born and raised in this amazing country, and today I want to share something close to my heart—how life in Brazil can be so different depending on where you live. The 2022 Census gave us a fresh look at how urban and rural life has changed here, and trust me, it’s fascinating.
Brazil is this huge, diverse country with everything from vibrant, fast-paced cities to quiet, peaceful countryside areas. And both sides have their own unique charm.
Brazil: A Nation of City Dwellers
Did you know that more than 84% of Brazilians now live in cities? It’s true! That’s over 170 million people living in urban areas. Cities like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are buzzing with life—picture streets full of cars, tall buildings, and a mix of people from all walks of life. São Paulo, in particular, is a massive city that never seems to sleep, with around 12 million people packed into it.
As someone who lives in Brazil, I can tell you that city life is fast-paced. We have access to pretty much everything—shopping malls, restaurants, theaters, public transportation—you name it. But city life also comes with its challenges. Traffic can be a nightmare, and finding peace and quiet in the middle of all that hustle can be tough.
The Serenity of Rural Brazil
But not everyone in Brazil lives in the cities. About 16% of Brazilians still call the countryside home. These are the places where life slows down, where people often live off the land, and nature is all around you. I’ve visited some rural areas in Brazil, and let me tell you, it’s a completely different vibe.
In the rural parts of Brazil, people tend to know their neighbors well, and life is more about community. It’s peaceful, and you can feel a connection to nature that’s hard to find in the city. The downside? You might not have the same level of access to hospitals, schools, or entertainment options like in urban areas.
The Growing Urbanization Trend
One thing that really stood out in the 2022 Census is how quickly Brazil has urbanized. A few decades ago, a lot more people lived in rural areas. My grandparents, for example, grew up on farms. But today, more and more people are moving to cities in search of better job opportunities and services.
This urbanization has transformed the way we live. Big cities are becoming economic hubs, offering jobs in everything from tech to tourism. At the same time, it’s getting harder to maintain some of the traditional ways of life in rural areas. It’s a bit of a double-edged sword, really—cities provide opportunity, but they can also make life more stressful.
Balancing Urban and Rural
What’s beautiful about Brazil is that you can experience the best of both worlds. Whether you’re exploring the iconic beaches of Rio or the lush farms in the countryside, you’ll find that Brazil has something for everyone. For me, living in the city has its perks, but there’s nothing quite like getting away to the countryside when you need to recharge.
I think that’s one of the reasons people are so drawn to Brazil—it’s a place where you can feel the pulse of city life one day and find peace in nature the next.
See you soon!
